The Missing Piece in Weight Loss: Your Identity

You already know what to do.

You know what foods are healthy. You know you should move your body. And chances are, you've lost the weight before.

So why do you keep ending up back in the same place?

Because knowing what to do doesn't change your self image.

Here’s an example from my own life.

My son was born in Canada, but because I'm also an Australian citizen, I got him Australian citizenship and a passport when he was born.

Technically, he's Australian. He has the passport to prove it.

But put him in a room full of Australians and he's still a Canadian kid.

He doesn't think like someone who grew up in Australia. He doesn't have years of Australian experiences or cultural references. He's not naturally calling the afternoon arvo, loving the taste of Vegemite on toast, or knowing what someone means when they say they're going to Woolies.

He has the passport.

But having the passport doesn't automatically give him an Australian identity.

And that's exactly what happens when we try to change our bodies

without changing our self image.

A diet can give you a set of rules. It can tell you what to eat, what not to eat, how much to exercise, and what you're supposed to do to lose weight.

You may force yourself to stick with those rules and lose 5, 10, or even 30 pounds.

But losing the weight doesn't automatically change how you think or who you believe you are.

Underneath it all, you can still believe:

I've always struggled with my weight.

I can't trust myself around food.

I need rules or I'll lose control.

I'm either being good or I've fallen off.

I always end up back here.

That's the dieter's identity.

And a dieter's identity can never create a naturally slim life with freedom around food.

You can follow a different set of behaviours for a while, but if your self image stays the same, your mind and nervous system will keep pulling you back toward what is familiar.

That's why you keep ending up back in the same cycle.

You didn't fail.

The diet was never designed to change the identity that keeps creating the cycle.

Another protocol isn't the answer.

The shift happens when you change the self image underneath the behaviours.

How you think.

What you believe about yourself.

Who you believe you are.

What feels normal and natural for you.

You stop trying to become better at dieting.

You Become Her.
